About Doug Davis
All of the photographs you see here, have been taken on my travels throughout the country. After graduating from Art Center College of Design in 1971, with a Bachelor's degree still photography, I started worked for Sid Avery, a very well known Photographer and Film Director, in LA. I was on staff with Sid for 10 years, doing both still photography and television film work.
I then went freelance as a Camera Assistant, and then a Director of Photography/Director, for almost 40 years, doing mostly TV commercials in the film business.
After retiring from the film business, I found myself going back to where I started, with still photography. I also taught "Commercials for Cinematography" at The Dodge College of Film & Media Arts, at Chapman University for 4 years, as an Adjunct Professor.
Although I shoot many different subjects, several of my images have a western theme to them, because it's a subject that I've been familiar with most of my life, and one I love. All of the different textures and designs, some which have been around for hundreds of years, are still exciting and current today. I think that the western way of life, and the lure of the "Old West", is a lifestyle that people still find deeply romantic, and continues to maintain a certain alluring charm with a culture all its own.
Several of my photos have been re-worked in various degrees, by manipulating them into a style, that from a distance looks like a normal photograph,....but when viewed up close, has a different feel to them. They still look like a photograph, and doesn't really distract from the subject matter, but by re-working them a bit, they sometimes take on the look of a photo illustration, line drawing, or a unique stylized painting. Some of these, which I've suggested, especially look good printed bigger on over-sized stretched canvas.
I look at each photograph I take, and decide on how I think it will translate best to the viewer, and how I want the finished piece to look. Then, I may try several different techniques before arriving at the one, if any, to see what works best for that particular shot. Sometimes just the right time of day, the right subject, or the right feeling, needs nothing but to be left alone.
Each of the images in my collections, have been shown in a way, I feel, best suits the subject matter and the feeling of the shot. It could be presented as a straight forward photograph, or one that has been slightly altered. But, as everyone's tastes are different, and we don't all see art, or photography, in the same way,.....it's not to say that any one of my images won't look good printed on Paper, Canvas, Acrylic, or any of the other products offered ! Or, if you like a particular image of mine, but don't like the way I've manipulated it, I can certainly respect your vision, and accommodate your wishes to have an unaltered photo, printed in the way you'd like it.
It's all up to you to decide on how you feel. I hope you enjoy my work, and thank you for your interest. Doug Davis
